On the Boards Design
Sometimes it’s simply experimentation and design for the love of a challenge and design for design’s sake. Sometimes they’re the genesis of a design that becomes an award-winning project. In either case, much of what we accomplish starts “On the Boards”.
Every design grows from its place - be it the city, countryside, mountains or sea. We begin by looking closely where we are - its atmosphere, histories, natural gifts and spirit. From here the design begins, and as the natural sense of place will always be true.
This project is located in Cape Charles, on the Eastern shore of Virginia. The heavily wooded site features a high dune that steps down to the Chesapeake Bay. The proposed house is sited to conform with the Chesapeake Bay Protection Act regulations. The house program is organized so as to take advantage of natural light and the views to the water. The house massing, materials and spatial conception are a play of traditional roof forms extensive glazing, porches with outdoor spaces that connect the inhabitants to the coastal landscape.
The modeling is not complete but rather it is in-progress as the design study continues.
